The river Ganga , also known as Ganges in the western world, rises in the western Himalayas at Gomukh, flows through India and Bangladesh and empties into the Bay of Bengal.
Historically the Ganga is of high significance with many former provincial or imperial capitals(such as Pataliputra, Kannauj, Kara, Kashi, Patna, Hajipur, Munger, Bhagalpur, Murshidabad, Baharampur, Kampilya, and Kolkata located on its banks.
The river Ganga is also considered sacred by the Hindus as it has nurtured and nourished civilizations since time immemorial.
